Earlier this week, Attorney General Garland announced that Colette S. Peters would serve as the next Director of the Bureau of Prisons, officially starting August 2, 2022.
Peters was recently the Director of the Oregon Department of Corrections since 2012, having served as the first woman in that position. She has also served in leadership positions in national corrections organizations. She has been commended for improving conditions for staff and inmates in Oregon
BOP oversees approximately 150,000 inmates over 122 prisons and 178 “community-based facilities.” It employs roughly 36,000 employees.
The news comes as the BOP has been criticized for holding inmates longer than legally authorized due to the BOP’s failure to implement the First Step Act.
